FAQs

Is my editor going to rip my manuscript apart?

Absolutely not! Every author's work is treated with respect and care it deserves. Your editor will use tracked changes in a Word doc to mark up any changes and insert comments to provide any suggestions or feedback. It is then up to you as the author to accept or reject those changes. It’s your story after all.

What order do the different types of edits go in?

1. Developmental Editing

2. Line Editing

3. Copy Editing

4. Proofreading

Do I need all stages of editing? What if my budget is small?

Time and money will influence your edits for sure. If you are on a tight budget, we recommend copy editing over all other editorial types.

How long will my editor have my manuscript for?

That really depends on length and the type of editing your receiving. Turn around times can be found on the pages for each service.

Does my manuscript need to be formatted in a particular way for my editor?

Yes. We ask that you provide your manuscript in a Word doc (.doc or docx). No PDFs please. Your manuscript should be double spaced, in an easy-to-read font such as Times New Roman, and size 14 (minimum).

Do I have to accept all edits my editor makes? What if I don’t agree with their changes/suggestions?

Your story is just that, yours. While we highly recommend you take up grammatical and mechanical changes, the suggestions made by comment and in your author letter are yours to incorporate or not. But note, our editors will always have your story, and your readers front of mind when suggesting edits. Feel free to email your editor and ask questions!

How will I receive my edits back?

You will receive several documents. The first will be a version on which the tracked changes are visible and ready for you to accept or reject as you see fit. The second will be a document where all tracked changes are accepted and only suggestions via comment box remains for you to work with. If your edit is a copy edit you will also receive a style sheet, with all important language features recorded for use by your proofreader. An author letter will accompany all editing services.

How do I pay for my edits? And when?

To book in your project, you will be required to pay a deposit of 5% (non-refundable). This holds your dates, and ensures your project is on the calendar. The day of commencement of your edits, 50% of your payment is due. On completion the remaining 45% is required before the delivery of your fully edited manuscript and accompanying documents. You will receive an invoice upon booking.

What if I need to cancel my project?

You can cancel in writing (via email) if your project is no longer going ahead. However, the booking deposit is non-refundable.
